There has yet been another incident of an employer scolding their domestic helper.

We have all heard of these stories before.

Employers scolding their helpers is a common scenario.

This recent incident really caught the news as the employer filmed herself scolding the maid and even put it on social media. Wow! 😮

You can visibly see the tension and lack of communication between both parties.

But why has it come to this? 🤔 And as an employer, how can you do better than scolding your helper?

On September 16, a maid agency shared a video of an employer berating her helper on Facebook.

In the video, the employer can be heard saying, “Hello! You think what? My time is very what? What do you think you are?”

The helper stood silently, while the tension in the moment was palpable.

The employer was extremely upset about the helper’s lack of response in the situation.

She even threatened to take her complaints further, including reporting the matter to the authorities.

But why did things escalate to this point? 🤔

The Role of Power Dynamics

It’s important to understand the dynamics that often exist between employers and domestic helpers.

Employers may unintentionally place stress on their helpers without realizing the impact.

Meanwhile, helpers hesitate to speak up due to fear of job loss or being sent home. 😔

(Think: When your work boss scolds you, how likely are you going to them when you have a problem.)

Over time, helpers feel powerless in these situations, making it difficult for them to speak up

Employers, on the other hand, are not aware of the pressures their helpers are under.

Lack Of Communication Leads To Impatience Which Leads To Scolding

When there is no healthy communication channel between the maid and her employer, chances are it will lead to disharmony.

It is clear in the video that the maid does not feel safe speaking up.

Employers get frustrated when they feel that the maid is shut off. 😤

Impatience ends up being the usual cause of the employer scolding their helper.

Helpers who are shy and find it hard to speak up will feel even less daring to say anything when they get scolded and yelled at. 😢

When Expectations Don’t Align with Reality

Behind this incident lies a broader issue that affects many employer-helper relationships—unmet expectations.

Despite efforts by the agency to mediate communication gaps persisted. 🗣️

This highlights a common theme: when expectations aren’t managed, frustration builds.

And without clear communication, tensions can rise.

Both parties end up feeling misunderstood or unsupported. 😢

While it’s easy to focus on specific incidents, the underlying reasons why employers scold can be complex.

Here are some common factors contributing to these tensions:

  1. Stress and Pressure

Life can be stressful, and employers may sometimes transfer that stress to their helpers, especially when juggling multiple responsibilities.

It’s an easy outlet to express frustration when things feel overwhelming 😓.

  1. Control and Expectations

Employers often have high expectations of their helpers.

When those expectations aren’t met, it can feel like a loss of control, leading to heightened emotions. 😡

  1. Cultural Differences

Domestic helpers often come from different countries and backgrounds.

What might seem like a small issue to one person can feel significant to another, especially when communication barriers exist.

  1. Misaligned Standards

Some employers have had negative experiences with past helpers. 🧑‍🤝‍🧑

Employers may be extra vigilant or critical, expecting issues to arise.

Find The Deeper Issue Causing The Frustration

The reality is that scolding is often a response to deeper issues.

Issues like miscommunication, stress, or unrealistic expectations.

But it doesn’t have to be this way…

Is it truly about the helper’s actions, or is there a larger issue at play?

Pause and consider what’s really driving the frustration and find constructive solutions

By fostering better communication and understanding, employers and helpers can work together to create a more harmonious environment. 🤝.

Helpers are not just employees.

They are people who play an important role in many households. 🏠

When both employers and helpers take the time to communicate effectively, it benefits everyone involved.

So next time frustrations arise, let’s take a moment to reflect on what’s truly happening beneath the surface, before resorting to scolding,
